Goshala also known as Gaushala or Cow Shelter is a Hindu tradition and a charitable organization that runs housing and care facilities for cows in need. The Sanskrit word ‘gau’ means cow or cattle and ‘shala’ means shelter.
The cows in Goshalas are fed with healthy and nutritious food that helps in keeping them healthy. The animals are also provided with medical care including vaccination deworming and treatments for any illnesses or injuries. The cow dung and urine are carefully collected and recycled for use as fertilizers and pesticides in farming.
Sreepeetham Goshalas have gained more attention and support from the public due to the increasing need to provide shelter and care for abandoned cows. Some Goshalas have also started generating income through organic farming and selling cow products such as milk ghee and cow urine.
The indigenous cow, bestowed upon mankind as a priceless treasure by Mother Nature herself, holds within her being the power to bestow health and prosperity upon those who revere and utilize her gifts. In addition to the tangible benefits she provides, the pious act of worshipping and caring for the Desi cow is believed to accrue spiritual merit, known as Punya. Sadly, there exists a disheartening lack of awareness regarding the profound significance of cows in our society, and as a result, their very existence is threatened by the looming danger of extinction.
In response to this grave concern, Swamiji, recognizing the urgency of the situation, embarked upon a noble initiative – the development of Gogramam in Sreepetham, a sanctuary that translates to “the abode of cows.” Here, a sanctuary is created where rare indigenous cow breeds are meticulously preserved and lovingly nurtured, ensuring their continuity for the benefit of future generations. The purpose behind this endeavour is not merely to safeguard their physical presence, but also to impart invaluable knowledge about these majestic creatures to the modern world.
The cows residing within the serene confines of Sreepeetham Gogramam enjoy a state of enviable well-being. Unlike their counterparts confined to cramped shelters, these cherished animals are granted the freedom to roam and graze healthily, leading to their overall improved physical health. Their contented spirits can be witnessed in their joyful movements and the serene expressions that grace their gentle faces.
Within the idyllic setting of Sreepeetham Gogramam, a wealth of information and insights await those who seek a deeper understanding of these remarkable creatures. Educational programs are meticulously designed to enlighten visitors, both young and old, about the immense contributions of indigenous cows to our society. From their remarkable ability to provide nutrient-rich milk to their role in sustainable agriculture and natural resource conservation, every aspect of their existence is celebrated and shared with utmost reverence.
The visionary efforts undertaken by Swamiji in the establishment of Sreepeetham Gogramam serve as a reminder of the profound interconnectedness between humans, nature, and these divine beings. As we collectively strive to preserve and cherish the Desi cow, we not only safeguard a precious species but also nurture a legacy of wisdom and compassion that will resonate for generations to come.
